Au Ver à Soie Soie d'Alger®, a registered trademark of Au Ver à Soie®, is a blend of 7 moderately lustrous, easily separable strands made from combed silk. It is perfect for all needlework applications and is available in an unparalleled range of over 620 colors. Available in 5 or 45-meter skeins, and also in 200-gram cones (approximately 780 meters upon request). Algiers Silk® does not come from Algeria. The name "Algiers" is linked to a manufacturing process developed by Au Ver à Soie® since 1820. In 1890, the Soie d'Alger® color chart featured 2,688 different colors, divided into 107 ranges. This chart serves as the reference for adding new colors. Our current chart is derived from it. The colors, digitized for computerized management purposes, nevertheless retain their original names. The evocative names "Green Bronze, Leaf Green, Salmon, Reseda, Antique Violet, Chinese Rose..." are nods to the past, and the musicality of these names evokes a refreshingly romantic feel. Soie d'Alger® has often been copied but never equaled. To deceive consumers, the original organization of the product range has even been plagiarized to such an extent that Au Ver à Soie® had to register the copyright! Used by the finest embroiderers, restorers, and carpet makers (this is how Soie d'Alger® sometimes ends up in China, only to return as carpets). Furthermore, it is easy to split, allowing for a multitude of applications in embroidery on canvas, silk canvas, and silk gauze. Highly regarded in the clothing and decoration industries, it is used as an effect thread for topstitching. The thread is wound onto the bobbin, and by stitching backwards with a needle thread of a different thickness and texture, magnificent saddle stitches are created.
